The BoShanCee Nursery, Inc. was established in 1986 as a wholesale, field grower of bushes in the range of 2'-12'. The 50 acre nursery is located in north Alabama near Huntsville. This location is 2 hours south of Nashville, 4 hours west of Atlanta, Ga., and 2 hours north of Birmingham, Al. The business is owned and managed by W. T.(Bill) O'Meara who is actively involved in all daily operations. Four full time employees are responsible for propagation, planting, growing, harvesting, and shipping. The company is actively involved in state, regional, and national associations. Advertising is by periodic mailings, trade magazines, and trade shows in Alabama(1) and Tennessee(2). The BoShanCee Nursery is located in weather zone 7a(0-10 F.). The soil pH is 5.5-6.5. All plants are drip irrigated with 2 wells. Fertilizer is applied in February and June. All plants are pruned after each flush of growth, usually 2-4 times per year. Plants are started in the field with a 2-year, quart liner produced at the nursery and grown 3-5 years to produce the final product. Harvesting occurs between October 1st and April 15th. Truncated, Caretree spades are used and most plants above 4' are machine dug and placed in wire baskets. Treated burlap, hog rings, and strapping are used to secure the wire-basket ball. A lifting loop is tied to facilitate handling. Plants are hardened off in shade and mist for 3 days before shipping. All plants are dug on order to insure freshness. Plants can be picked up at the nursery or shipped by 5th wheel(80-110 plants) or semi-tractor trailer(150-250). Shipping costs average 10-15% of the value of the shipped order.
